Entitled neighbor repeatedly steals a private parking spot for 2+ hours, insisting the owner should be more "neighborly;" so the owner calls a tow truck: 'I'm done. You don't get to guilt trip me'

After spending extra every month to reserve a special parking spot in their complex, this resident was found fuming with their finger on the phone dial, poised to call the tow truck on an entitled neighbor who repeatedly stole their spot. 

Whenever a dispute erupts between neighbors, it's best to avoid all conflict. Because you're living so close to one another, keeping good relationships and strong alliances between adjacent residents is absolutely the neighborly thing to do. Peace is all fine and dandy, however, until someone breaks the unspoken trust between neighbors, taking advantage and overstepping the boundaries (literally). Helping herself to her neighbor's designated parking spot, this entitled neighbor felt like she could do whatever she wanted in the complex. Perhaps if the cold, hard latch of a tow truck bent the front end of her bumper, she'd realize that she was occupying a space that was not hers. 

Sometimes, the backup chimes of a tow truck are the only bells that will ring true in the mind of an entitled thief, especially when they refuse to heed the warnings of the actual owner of the parking area.

    Having lived at the beach for most of my formative years, I know a thing or two about parking disputes. Obviously, I didn't pitch a tent on the sand every night, but when you live within a half mile from the shoreline, there's bound to be some competition at the end of your work day for the most choice spots. With very little turnover and even fewer spots, parking was extremely competitive. 

    My first apartment was an expensive, sand-filled shoebox with no laundry and no extra benefits like a designated parking spot. Despite that, my neighbor would use cones to reserve a street spot during the day, hoping it would still be there for her when she got home from a shift. The problem with that was that she would leave her stupid cones on the street for 8+ hours, gatekeeping a perfectly good parking spot that someone else could have used throughout the day to go to the beach. 

    Selfishly, I'd glare at the cones after circling the block for 20 minutes, wondering what the consequences might be if I swooped in and took the spot for myself. I never had the gall to stoop to a thieving level like this, but even if I had, it was a 100% public spot. She had no claim to it! Unlike the person in this next story, who paid extra every month to have a reserved spot for them in their apartment complex… Now, if someone comes and steals a private spot, that's a totally different story.

  • hollowthatfollows Call the tow truck and if he confronts you just say "I didn't call them, must be the apartment complex cracking down on people who don't pay for parking" and leave it at that. Not your problem anymore

  • Iggys 1984 I would first speak to the leasing office about it. Let them know you intend to call a tow next time. They may have a preferred vendor for you to call or want to issue him a warning first. Then follow whatever instructions they give you. Call their tow company, call their emergency maintenance line, etc., when it happens again. As far as not being neighborly... your neighbor is the one not being neighborly when they steal your parking space for hours at a time at least once a week. Th
